SANDALS GRANDE RIVIERA - (formerly Sandals Ocho Rios)

I’ll start posting these in chronological order. Up first is our trip to Jamaica 5 years ago. I think 5 years is far enough back to begin….

Location: Ocho Rios, Jamaica
Travel Date: April 2005
Length of stay: 7 nights
My Rating:  * * * *

Pros: This hotel is quite spacious. I personally just love hotels that offer a lot of nice grounds so that you don’t feel like you’re always running into people. You can take long walks around the resort and enjoy all the landscaping and the fish pools. There are lots of colorful flowers, trees and hidden quiet pools that you can jump into if you feel like getting away from the crowds. The hotel staff was very friendly and accommodating. Sandals is known for their great all-inclusive experience. The beach is not very big, but the sand is
clean and they have large decks by the pool and bars to compensate. There are several restaurants to choose from as well.

Cons: One of biggest cons, if not the biggest, is the distance of the resort from the airport in Montego Bay. It is a 2 hour very scary bus ride!! Or you can choose a 45 minute plan ride for an additional $150.  We chose the bus ride to and from the hotel and dreaded every minute of it.

Rooms: We stayed in the 4th floor of the Riviera building in the Concierge Club.  The best thing about the room was that it was Oceanfront and had an amazing view!  The bathroom was spacious and clean.  The room itself was not very big but it was comfortable.  The balcony was a decent size and again that view was just amazing! The oceanfront rooms face west so you see the sunset every night which I thought was great.  We didn't think much of the "Concierge Club."  We could have literally paid a lot less to stay in a lower floor and enjoyed it just the same.

Food: The resort has a good amount of restaurants that offer some variety.  We really enjoyed the Italian place, went there about 3 times. During the day they have the snack bars that serve your typical fries, burgers and sandwiches.  There you can stop in and just grab some food to go back to the beach or to your room without having to change out of your bathing suit.  It's open all night too, if you get hungry after hours.

Tips: The resort is divided into two parts.  One side (mostly where all the Villas are) is the farthest away from the beach and its separated from the beach side of the resort by a local street.  Remember this when booking if you want to have direct access to the beach! If not, you'll have to take the the shuttle they provide but I can't imagine that's too much fun.

Well, I hope this was helpful if you're considering going there.  I know I love reading opinions from those who have been when I'm going somewhere!

Next review.... Sandals Royal Bahamian.
